As we were leaving the coastal rod to take the toll road to Colombo, we came upon a festival in a small town.
And we thought Thaipusam in Singapore was intense (link to last year pictures)

We also stopped at a Sea Turtle Hatchery Center.

The main aim of the project is to monitor local sea turtle activity and conserve the local nesting sites.
One of the most important activities of the
project is its hatchery. Within the sanctuary of the project, collected and rescued eggs can hatch safely away from predators before being released into the sea.

We drove for a while along the coastline and stopped at Pereliya Village.

The village was totally destroyed by a 90-feet high Tsunami wave on the 26th Dec 2004. More than 2,500 people died and 99.8% of the village was destroyed making 450 families homeless.
It is also where The Queen of the Sea engine No 59 and its 8 carriages on the Colombo–Galle express route was derailed and 1500 people were killed making it the world worst ever train disaster.

Built with the assistance of Japan’s Honganji Temple of Kyoto, the  0 m tall (54 ft) statue was based on the Buddhas of Bamiyan in Afghanistan, destroyed by the Taliban in March 2001.

What a day and some sun rays can do to a place ☀️

Really wished we had another day around this area (not that we wasted any days at the other areas either).

Couldn’t leave without going on a quick stroll in the streets nearby to see it under the sun (and not the rain!)
