The first ship carrying convicts arrived in Fremantle on 1 June 1850. By the time transportation of convicts ceased in 1868 just over 9,700 convicts had been transported to Western Australia. In 1886 with less than 50 convicts still imprisoned the British government passed control of the prison to the colonial government and became the colony primary place of incarceration.

Following a series of prisoner riots and growing concerns with prison condition, a royal commission in 1983 recommended the Prison’s closure. Fremantle was decommissioned on 8 November 1991.

One of the must see in Fremantle is the Prison.

Former prison.

The Prison was actually constructed by the convicts themselves between 1852 and 1859 using limestone quarried on the site. The first prisoners moved into the main cells block in 1855.

Our first stop was Fremantle just outside of Perth.

Reminded us a bit of New Orleans with all those cast iron balconies.
