After a drive to the south, we drove to the north of Margaret River.

Cape Naturaliste lighthouse is not as impressive in size as Leeuwin Lighthouse but was the last on mainland Australia to be home to lighthouse keepers who lived and worked here until 1996.

It was build in 1903 and stands on a 100 metre bluff overlooking the Geographe Bay. The light’s white beam is visible for 25 nautical miles (46km) and identifies itself to mariners by flashing twice every 10 seconds with 2.5 and 7.5 second interval.

The original Fresnel lens is still in place and is now driven by an electric motor but originally the clockwork mechanism rotated the lens which, including the turntable, weights about 12.5 tons. The turntable is hollow and contains 156.5 kg (or 12 litres) of mercury on which the lens float.

Busselton Jetty.

Longest timber piled jetty in the Southern Hemisphere.

Construction began in 1865 as a mere 161 meters, sand drift resulted in an additional 131 meters being added in 1875. Further extensions were made throughout the following 90 years creating the 1.8 km length. After more than a century of use and servicing 5000 vessels, it officially closed as a port in 1973.

1.841 kms to the end… of course we made them walk the plank and back. We are that kind of parents. They loved it 😉

Quick stop in Koombana Bay for a look at this Aboriginal sculpture.

Wardandi Boodja is a five-and-half-meter steel bust sculpture representing a Noongar face and South West families. The artists (Alex & Nicole Mickle of Safehaven Studios) consulter with various families in the region to ensure the image was accurate and the concept was to demonstrate that the face was “no one’s yet everyone’s at the same time” The sculpture has been purposefully designed in such a way as to recognize all the families of the region. A comprehensive study of historical photographs dating from the 1870s to the early 1900s, coupled with contemporary images and faces of Noongar people has enabled us to create an image of a generic Noongar man
