A Total TaiTai Tale

Today, let’s take the red one.

We visited some rough neighborhood on our walks like week 😉

NB: after some internet research, the house belongs to Tommy Goh, founder of JIT holding. He has an interesting story. Oh also apparently most of his toys are not registered to be driven in Singapore, he’s more of a collectionner.

Some parkings in Singapore mess up with your mind.

I’m letting you think this through….

Thinking…

Thinking…

Thinking…

Yep we drive on the left side of the road yet some parkings “insist” on messing up with you and make you drive on the right side until you reach the public roads then you have to go back to left side driving.

At least this parking is well marked, which is not always a given. Plus there are a lots of one-way streets in Singapore so you barely think about the left side driving anyway.

It’s my “It’s all Messed Up” days 😉

I looked for this post to reblog because there was a poll on one of the Expat Wives forum on worse car parks in Singapore.

Yes indeed, not only the best rooftops for cocktails, best high teas with girlfriends, best restaurants and crowd favorite best hairdressers (for cut, color, highlights, curly hair, etc) are rated by the Expat wives, but there’s also a ranking of car parks and not all of them are created equals either so newbies need to know which car parks are to be avoided at all cost 😉

Not only they drive on the wrong side but their roads are narrow and parkings (ramps and spots) even more according the the Singapore Expat Wives 😂

PS: while I sometimes make fun of the Expat Wives (& forum) I’m grateful for them… there are a mine of informations and also endless source of entertainment.

Monday Art by Murals Artist Yip Yew Chong.

Di Tanjong Katong – 2020

“This painting was specially done for a music video to "Di Tanjong Katong”, an endearing song many of us sang during our childhood days. It was also an unusual collaboration with Gendang Akustika, a Malay musical ensemble, who invited me to join them in creating this little National Day gift. Like the song lyrics, my mind pines for the old Tanjong Katong beach, its idyllic kampong and kelongs. The clear blue sea merges with the azure blu sky and under it, villagers fish, relax and play carefreely. I hear the waves lap and coconut trees rustle. I hear the tune of “Di Tanjong Katong” singing in my heart.“

****
Back in March/April Yip Yew Chong had a few exhibitions across Singapore. The first one was at ArtPorters gallery with some of his mural inspired art and then 2 exhibitions back to back, one at the Substation, followed by one in the hotel Sofitel. Those pieces were slightly different than his murals but still very intrigued and detailed paintings. You could lose yourself in front of each of his canvas. I will post one each Monday (it will last until the end of the year!!! Yeah one less post to think about 😉)

Your mission today, if you accept it, is to locate a grocery store. Bigger than the convenient shop in your apartment complex but smaller than the 5-story We-sell-everything-from-salt-to-fridge store you’ve been to lately.

Mission accepted: Drove my big car on the “wrong” side of the road and located a tiny parking space.

The supermarket was tiny, ok not as tiny as my locale supermarket in my neighborhood in Beijing. But I managed to find most of the things I had on my shopping list.

I will scout some other stores located not far from our apartment in the next few days to assess the offering then I will do like everybody else and order online (I can even do it thru an app on my phone)… Same prices, free deliver and I won’t have to get all the bags from the car to the 28th floor 😉

Vacation is over… back to regular programming 😉

Singapore will be the country in which I will have lived the longest (China will be a tie but it was twice 3 years, not 6 years in a row).

After moving every 3 to 4 years since I left France 30 years ago, I’m kind of missing the settling in in a new country, the discoveries, the thrill and even the frustration (it keeps you busy 😉). You’ve got to get out of your comfort zone and jump in. It’s a swim or sink kind of situation.

This summer we did 9 evening walks over the 9-week break.

We decided this time to up the challenge and do the 9 walks over the first 9 days of the year and before school restarts.

The key for success is to take the (really) long detour to the restaurant/hawker center so J doesn’t realize he’s clocking the minutes and the kms 😉

NB: We did 60+ kms this summer and we are just shy of 60 kms this time

April 2017. Beijing, China

Another trip that I hadn’t classified as a “trip” because it almost felt like we were going back home. It had been indeed home for 3 years until less than a year ago.

Another birthday trip, this one with dear daughter. We decided that our birthday present this year should be a trip back to Beijing to visit our respective BFF. Mission accomplished.

Seeing a city as a tourist is completely different than living there. That is one of the reason I love this “expat” life so much; it allow us to not just skim the surface of a place, we go slightly deeper and we get a permanent connection. Connections link us.

~~~Just a little FYI So for my last 200 days in Singapore I have decided to reblog, in no special order, a post from the 6 years I will have spent on the Little Red Dot.
*Well I changed my mind. Since it’s vacation time and I cannot travel I want to relive our experiences in Asia with a few pictures.
I have excluded pictures of our trips because I have already reposted them while we were stuck on our Little island during the past 2 years (& you can find them here!). PS: you will then get 2 posts a day!! ~~~
Paris 2017. Paris, France
So I wasn’t going to include this because well it’s “my” country but it was indeed a trip for me… 1 of 2 birthday celebration trips that month/year.
When “Let’s Meet In The Middle To Celebrate Our Birthdays” happens to be Paris 😉
“Singapore” & “Canada” who met in “Norway” reunite in “France”… Let’s the party begin.
It’s was a great 4-day reunion and I didn’t mind having to go back to Paris and seeing it thru the eyes of a tourist…. Something I want to try to do when I go back to live there in a few months.
Another walk to catch the opera house around sunset.
The key is to wait for the big cruise ship to leave the port so you have access to the restricted area and get a great view of the opera house 😉
December 2016. Sydney, Australia
This was the year we were finally living close enough that we could go to see our friend in Sydney. Friend we had met 18 years before in Buenos Aires.
As I mentioned before you see photos of places, read about it and then you are there in person and it all changes because now there’s a connection. From walking on top (like literally on the very top) of the Sydney Bridge on Christmas Day to walking on Bondi Beach, Surfing in Byron bay, hiking in the Blue Mountains and the grand finale with the New Year Eve fireworks overlooking Sydney harbor this was truly a great (first) trip down under.
Oh and I also jump from an airplane from 14,000ft over the Gold Coast. No big deal 😉
