Celine on the Little Red Dot is over.

Photo taken a few months after we arrived… took me almost 6 years to finally found a quote to post it 😂

PS: By the time you read this, we should have landed safely in Paris, then Lyon and made it home to our summer house near Grenoble.

Sunday Sound of Singapore – Doors are closing… Be happy happy

Sound on 🔈

I now know it doesn’t say Be Happy Happy but for the longest time I thought it did and that made me happy that I was wished a good day.

I now know it’s the Malay version of the English Mind the Gap. First in Chinese 請小心空隙 (qǐng xiǎoxīn kòngxì), then in Malay Berhati-hati di ruang platform (be careful at the platform area), and finally in Tamil (I had to do some research for that one!) தயவு செய்து தளம் மேடை இடைவெளியை கவனத்தில் கொள்ளவும் (Tayavu ceytu taḷam mēṭai iṭaiveḷiyai kavaṉattil koḷḷavum)

And the doors are closing… on my (last) Sunday Sound of Singapore.

~~Every city has its own color, smell, sound, and vibe. While I can share the colors through photography and sometime the vibe too, I thought I would try to share with you the sounds that are so specific to Singapore. ~~

And See Everything (with your own eyes)

Let’s the new adventure begin.

Because moving back to your own country after living abroad for so long (24+ years of expat life in my case) is also an adventure.

Bring it on Paris, I’m ready.

Well the summer house in the French Alps first, then a bit of Switzerland for daughter’s graduation, then a bit of traveling in Ireland to visit the American in-law spending the summer and then the Netherlands for son’s university settling in but for sure Paris right after summer!

On a side note… if you plan to visit us, rather do it sooner than later, we don’t tend to stay put very long, even more so in France 😉

~~~ Just a little FYI So for my last 200 days in Singapore I have decided to reblog, in no special order, a post from the 6 years I will have spent on the Little Red Dot. I have excluded pictures of our trips because I have already reposted them while we were stuck on our Little island during the past 2 years (& you can find them here!). PS: you will then get 2 posts a day!! ~~~
Definitely not in Beijing anymore.
It seems like yesterday we were landing in Singapore 14 hours (and a good night sleep in the plane) after saying good bye to our summer house in France and start yet a new chapter in yet another country.
Initially it was for 2 years (so our daughter could complete HS and her IB diploma), we were hoping for 2 more years (which we did) and I got a 2 extra bonus years.
Singapore has been the country I have called home the longest since I left France in 1990!
I loved our former apartment and I thought I was going to miss it.
But this is the view from my bedroom… literally when I open my eyes this is the view I see (I never close my curtains -there is absolutely nobody who could see into my bedroom)… the sunrise is not always this vibrant but it very very rarely disappoints.
PS… We moved to a different apartment within the same condominium but different building. The North exposure of our balcony is the same (so I can still see Malaysia far far away, under some weather conditions) but now my East facing bedroom isn’t obstructed by a building.
I just found a couple pictures of the view from my former bed… as you can see there was a building -the one I live in now!- obstructing the best part of the sunrise!!
I’ve had great views over the years and in the different countries we got to call home but never did I get this kind of sunrise view straight from my bed. No getting up involved either.
When I say that I would always choose an apartment for its view over its size I don’t mean the million dollar view with the iconic skyline… I don’t need the MBS or Eiffel Tower or Empire State Building to quality as a great view in my book.
This apartment has been a great little cocoon for J & I during the pandemic. For a city as urban as Singapore it was great to see Parks, HDBs as well as millions dollars houses all from the 270° view of my balcony.
The official name is D’Leedon.
I call it Club Med…
Well, with 2 large swimming pools, 4 children and relaxation pools, 2 large jacuzzi, 2 clubhouses as well as indoor and outdoor fitness facilities. Then 4 tennis court, 1 basketball court, bbq pits and that’s not counting 2 screening rooms, 2 golf simulator rooms, 2 billard rooms, 2 game rooms, 2 karaoke rooms, 1 piano room. add that 2 party houses, 2 functions rooms and several BBQ pits. We even have a maze 😂
With 1715 units it’s one of the largest condominium in Singapore (only outshined at the end of 2019 by a development in Tampines which will have 2,203 apartments, when completed) however the 7 towers in D’Leedon occupy less than 30% of the site, with over 70% given to landscaping & facilities.
Finished in late 2014, the Seven skyscrapers with flower-shaped plans are dotted across this residential complex in Singapore, which was completed by Pritzker Architecture Prize recipient Dame Zaha Hadid*
I was walking home around sunset a couple days ago and I decided to go to the HDB nearby to grab some pictures from a high point of the place I have called home for 5+ years (longest I ever lived somewhere). Wasn’t disappointed with change of light and the outcome.
Sometimes the Wanderings and Wonderings are just under your nose.
* Zaha Hadid was a predominant architect in Beijing landscape and I photographed a few of her buildings
We said a final goodbye to our little “Club Med” yesterday after giving back the apartment keys and the access card.
Choosing a house that will become a home is not easy when you arrive in a new country and unfamiliar environment. Every family has different criteria.
I go with a feeling. I learned that a smaller place with an open view (& good neighborhood) always far outweighs a bigger place with a shitty view (& dead neighborhood).
Back in the day when we were choosing we thought If we could have Apartment A in Compound B with outdoor living C, the choice would be easy.
Not sure if you are familiar with the Fast – Good – Cheap pricing method but the idea is that the client can only choose 2 of those words. You can have it Good and Fast it won’t be Cheap. You can also have it Fast and Cheap but it won’t be Good and finally you can have it Good and Cheap but it won’t be Fast. With the apartment the 3 choices are: Size, Location, View. You can only pick 2 options!!.
We ended up choosing the perfect place for us.
And that’s a wrap.
6 years in D’Leedon coming to an end.
2 years ago today in the middle of the pandemic and with the restrictions of visiting apartments we chose this one via a video call. We already lived in D’Leedon, we were just downsizing since we went from a family of 4 when we arrived in 2016 to 2 persons. It’s been a great little cocoon for J & I.
Our life is fitting in 9 bags, 3 carry-ons, 2 backpacks, 1 camera bag, and 1 purse.
Now it’s time to relax until our flight on Sunday night.
