Monday murals.

This could almost pass for à murals from Yop Yew Chong since it depicts some kind of life in singapore… well there’s no durian trees in singapore but this was right next to a little outdoor shop selling durians.

Just an FYI… I have finally exhausted all the posts of Yip Yew Chong many murals around town.

Enjoying the morning read with a view and the sound of the birds at Kebun Baru Birdsinging Club.

One of our go-to, a little bit out of the tourists path, place to take our visitors.

It’s a morning ritual go some of the uncles. One of them told us that he comes around 5-6am!!!

Well I guess if I can see people take their dog on a walk around 6 am to avoid the heat, they can take their bird for a “walk” early too!!

We’ve learned over the years to come early, and by early I mean 9:30-10:00 and on the weekends to see the most action.

~~~Just a little FYI So for my last 200 days in Singapore I have decided to reblog, in no special order, a post from the 6 years I will have spent on the Little Red Dot. PS: you will then get 2 posts a day!!~~~
Sunday Sound of Singapore – Rain in the Tropics
Sound on 🔈
There’s rain and then there’s tropical rain.
There’s a chance you might get drier after a shower than after being caught in a tropical storm.
The only upside of tropical rain is that you are not freezing cold after being drenched in water, and believe me I know rain I have lived both in Scotland and Norway, and both were my longest postings (4.5 & 4 years)… well until my 6 years in Singapore.
~~Every city has its own color, smell, sound, and vibe. While I can share the colors through photography and sometime the vibe too, I thought I would try to share with you the sounds that are so specific to Singapore. ~~
The cafe near the French embassy is loving the 4 Sundays of French elections this year. 😉
So we voted again this weekend (& will in 2 weeks) for “les élections législatives” where we choose our representatives at the National Assembly (and give the newly elected president a majority or decide to go for a coalition!).
Five years later we are at it again. Second tour of the Presidential French Election.
It’s the first time I have the opportunity to vote twice (as in 2 different elections) in the same country. Also voting in Singapore is exactly the same process as if I was voting in any city or village in France.
We don’t get a sticker in France once we have voted (I once told hubby we don’t need self gratification) and this time the cafe near the Embassy didn’t even have a Bleu-Blanc-Rouge cupcake offer that we could “gratify” ourselves with ;-).
Interesting facts: There are 8.934 registered voters in Singapore and 5.403 or 60.48% voting members at the “Premier tour” 2 weeks ago. Interesting enough there were 6.524 registered voters in 2017 (and everyone is saying foreigners are leaving singapore!!).
95% of French people of voting age are registered on the electoral lists, that’s 48.7 million registered. Since the late 1990s, the registration is automatic at age 18 and when you become a French citizen.
Countdown: evil or blessing?
On one hand it keeps me focus on the finishing line so I can plan the things I want to do, the people I want to see but on the other hand each time I’m planning something I have in the back of my mind that it could be my last outing, drink, lunch, dinner with them.
Borders are starting to open in the region, getting in and out of Singapore is easing so we are starting to not only have to coordinate calendar with outing, drink, lunch, dinner in each other life but a new parameter has come back into the equation the “Will you be in town or out of the country on these days?”
The last outings, drinks, lunches, dinners are slightly more permanent in expat life. But I also believe that’s once our paths have crossed they can crossed again, especially for the important ones.
On that note I’ve got a few walks to take, a few photo outings to go to and I can can count on my expat and local friends to motive me to plan them.
When I started outrigger canoe sessions 2+ years ago I did it because a friend invited me to try it.
My husband was a bit surprised… you do know it will be on water and you might get wet. 🙄
My love for the beach, the sun and exercice is no secret but somehow I persevered and I quite enjoy it. Ok don’t get me wrong, I still only commit to one training a week (some of my teammates do 2 trainings back to back on Tuesday AND on Thursday, plus some on the weekend) and I’m not disappointed when it’s canceled because of bad weather (BUT I have never canceled any sessions on my own!!).
This “One Ticket to Life Please” sign greets me every Tuesday and I’ll miss it when I leave.
The thing about countdown is that you get a tangible number on intangible time.
When I see Day 57 on my countdown it doesn’t seem like my departure is quite so soon. I keep telling myself I’ve got almost 2 months but then when I check my outrigger canoe calendar I see 8 more training sessions and I can see how time will fly by.
Reflection
I’m in my bedroom looking at the reflection of J on my window, listening to his interview with one of the university and I’m in awe of my baby.
When you are days in and days out with them you don’t see them grow or get older and then one day you step back and their older self just hit you in the gut. Gone is the baby, and a glimpse of a young adult appears.
And it’s just the beginning…
Bingo this year again for the Welcome Back to the School Year coffee attendance 😉
22-Apr-2022: D-58 before departure
And just like that I’m closing my 19 Years of School chapter.
No more first day of school. No more last day of school.
No more parent-student-teacher meetings. No more Parent Teacher Association meetings.
But also no more Welcome Coffee. The international schools we got to be part of in Aberdeen, Pau, Beijing, Stavanger, Beijing and Singapore have been one of the great way to integrate into a new city. There were always someone to welcome you, answer your questions or even ask for your help to yet another conference, fundraising or holiday prep at school so you didn’t feel like you might get bored 😉.
Onto the new chapter.
Last day of School for my boy.
I still remember the chaos as we walked into pre-nursery class (it’s was the British system so it correspond to pre-kindergarten) in Beijing, but you let go of my hand and dived in. Having a older sister, school didn’t seem to scare you because you were familiar with it and that’s probably why I didn’t get a chance of a posed picture in your uniform by the class door. But you loved that class mascot and wanted a photo with it.
Unlike his sister who went to 6 schools in 5 different countries. He “only” went to 4 schools in 3 different countries. While Singapore turned out to be her shortest stay it will be his longest.
Last day of School for my girl.
I can still remember your little hand in mine as we were heading to your first day at nursery in Aberdeen 15 years ago, yet it barely feels like 15 months ago .
Each of the 6 different schools across the globe you went to made you the well rounded young lady you’ve become.
The world is your oyster. Make the most of it.
It seems like yesterday I was immortalizing her last day of school and now I’m doing it again with her brother 4 years later.
Pretty soon it will also be your last day of school in Lausanne but I won’t be there to immortalizing it. Life cycle.
