Mustafa: your best dream or worse nightmare?

We braved Mustafa Center one last time*. It’s hard to explain Mustafa, it is one of Singapore’s 24-hour shopping malls where you can find probably everything you need as it sells more than 300,000 items. Like a Walmart if Walmart had 10 times the customer at the same time in ¼ of the space, and the aisle could barely contained 2 people crossing each other. It’s crazy, with things and people everywhere but also fun.

When I first arrived in Singapore I remember the questions on the expat forums “Where can I find x, y or z EXCEPT at Mustafa”, because we all knew we could find it there but were we willing to brave the chaos of it 😂

* I might have to go back because I bought some really really good sweets and I need to get some more.

Ok only in Singapore and only to this particular restaurant… the famous S$2 chicken rice 1 Michelin Star hawker Place 😉

In Singapore, food is viewed as crucial to its national identity and a unifying cultural thread. Eating is national pastime and food a national obsession.

From S$2 hawker food to few hundred dollars Michelin 3-Star restaurants the choice is wide. I had the privilege to sample a variety of great restaurants from all type of cuisine from around the world on this little red dot but the length my Singaporean friends go to pick special hawker centers for special dishes is amazing. I have decided to surrender and just let them choose… because they know better. I have also been known to text them if I’m in an unfamiliar neighborhood to ask them what is, in their opinion, the best option nearby. No point of learning afterwards that I was next to the best Hainanese Chicken Rice or Nasi Lamak or Fried Hokkien mee or Char Kuey Teow and I miss it.

I’m going to miss the hawkers centers for its melting pot of people and cheap but awesome variety of dishes.
