A Total TaiTai Tale

Tale of a Total TaiTai who was in Beijing & Beyond and is now in Singapore & Surroundings!

Month: December, 2021

Oh no, I was so looking forward…

  • to partying… but no more than 5 people, because group restriction.
  • to drinking… but only until 10:30pm, after which alcohol is prohibited to be served at restaurants/bars.
  • to watching the fireworks… well the weather took care of that.

My philosophy is that you can go to bed after the time the fireworks you watched in person anywhere around the world is over.

So for me it’s Sydney, Australia which mean by 9:15pm (Singapore time) I can be cozy in bed with some herbal tea. I’m telling you, a true party animal I am. 😉

The full moon might not have been behind the Taj Mahal but it was still magical.

On a side note: I think it might be easier to gain access to Fort Knox than it is to get to the Taj Mahal at night. There were so many check points, they were adamant of NO cell phone (got grope a couple times to make sure I wasn’t hiding any in my boobs !!) and we got escorted by armed policemen.

October 2015. Agra, India

I do not want to sound like a broken record but here’s another trip I had to sell (and over sell several times) to another member of the family…. And it apparently turned out to be one of said-member’s favorite trip (can we see a pattern here?!!).

No matter how many amazing beautiful pictures you can see of a place, seeing it with your own eyes doesn’t compare in the slightest (I had the same feeling each time I was on the Great Wall) and you will always cherish your less then perfect photos way more. “It’s better to see something once than to hear about it a thousand times”

And while we also visited the Taj Mahal early morning for the sunrise, having the privilege to see it under the moon rise at night was magical

While doing some research about our trip I read that the Taj Mahal could be visited at night but only around the full moon (two days prior, the day of and two days after) for 4 hours per day with a limited number of people (50 people) by batch of 30 minutes. So only 400 people per day or around 2000 per month. Checked our travel dates.
Checked the full moon dates.
Bingo we would be in India right around the full moon. It would have been too bad not to be in Agra.

Old Delhi, Agra and the pink city Jaipur were a treat to the eyes.

~~~Just a little FYI So for my last 200 days in Singapore I have decided to reblog, in no special order, a post from the 6 years I will have spent on the Little Red Dot.
*Well I changed my mind. Since it’s vacation time and I cannot travel I want to relive our experiences in Asia with a few pictures.
I have excluded pictures of our trips because I have already reposted them while we were stuck on our Little island during the past 2 years (& you can find them here!). PS: you will then get 2 posts a day!! ~~~
The beauty of globalization is that if I really wanted I could have had the exact same Réveillons in Singapore than if I was in France… and only sell half a kidney 😉.
Réveillon: French: [ʁevɛjɔ̃] a long dinner held in the evening preceding Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve. Its name descends from the word réveil (meaning “waking”), because participation involves staying awake until morning, as the meal finishes.
Currently looking at what’s in the fridge/freezer because my Réveillon companion could care less (& wouldn’t eat half of the typical food anyway!)
Not only one but two of my pictures were on display. Feeling really grateful the curator chose them.
May 2015. Dubai, UAE
This trip was a bit special. It needed to be done so I could somehow get closure from my ordeal the previous month. Photography exhibition from our Nepal trip to raise funds and reunion with my fellow photographers friends.
This was my second trip to Dubai, yet I’ve never took a real vacation in Dubai. The first time was in 2013 for a weeklong photography workshop. It seems like photography and Dubai are linked in my world.
Last new regulations of the year…. for sure (but so much can happen in 48 hours!!)
So to be clear this was the default measures less than a month ago, then the omicron cases started to come from people arriving on planes. So they went to their default setting which is “panic” and started to quarantine people in hotels, facilities, hospitals… it wasn’t quite clear. Only people who tested positive on arrival (mind you, you have to have a negative test to be able to board a plane departing for Singapore), then it was also people near a positive case (3 rows?, 10 rows? around, again not quite clear) then wild rumors started to circulate that entire plane were quarantined if there were 1 case on the flight.
A week later and realizing that there would be not enough space in hospital, facilities or hotel if they started to quarantine everybody without as much as symptoms or in any danger they were back to their “let’s go back to less panicked” setting.
Day 2 in Kathmandu.
I realized that since I’m here on a photography tour I’m not using my iPhone as usual hence don’t have a lot to share on my blog.
But here’s a photo to prove that I am indeed where I said I was going. Me and one of the Sadhu “Holy men” in Pashupatinath in Kathmandu, Nepal
Tuesday Talk
Those little things that are so Singapore but you don’t notice.
At every MRT entrance there are 3 or more little steps you have to climb up before you take the stairs or escalator down the station. You might think that it’s counterproductive but they are there for a purpose.
Singapore being in the tropics, it is prone to tropical storm and flash flood. Those 3 steps save undergrounds subway station being flooded.
Build it before you need it. Anticipate.
Good morning.
What better way than waking up and seeing a fresh ¼ pig on the kitchen floor.
We are not having lunch here but I’m sure it would have been delicious.
March 2015. Guizhou Province, China
So with this one I’m going with the “let them stop scrolling thru their feed and read what is this all about” factor.
I could have chosen any of the more picturesque photos of our trip in Guizhou Province, south China. The quaint villages where we did a home stay, the green hills we conquered, the local artisans we discovered but this photo reminds me that while we enjoyed our stay at resorts by the beach in all sort of tropical islands the memories that stay with us the most are those from the Out Of The Beaten Path trips.
Original caption update… there were some left over for our dinner… and it was delicious
PS: I’ll post some of the more picturesque photos tomorrow on the Instagram account: https://www.instagram.com/atotaltaitaitale/
Monday Art by Murals Artist Yip Yew Chong.
All Murals Greeting Card – 2016
“In late 2015, I had made many new friends through painting several public murals. When the Chinese New Year season of 2016 arrived, I decided to draw a Greeting Card with all the murals contained in the card. I thought it would be a very special card for all the new friends. It turned out to be not just a simple greeting card, but an elaborate piece of artwork!”
***
Back in March/April Yip Yew Chong had a few exhibitions across Singapore. The first one was at ArtPorters gallery with some of his mural inspired art and then 2 exhibitions back to back, one at the Substation, followed by one in the hotel Sofitel. Those pieces were slightly different than his murals but still very intrigued and detailed paintings. You could lose yourself in front of each of his canvas. I will post one each Monday (it will last until the end of the year!!! Yeah one less post to think about 😉
Another first time. I had to weigh myself before boarding a plane. Really good for self esteem 🙂
FYI they overestimate your weight (for safety reason for sure!) because I know for a fact I’m not the weight stated by the scale. Just saying (& not sharing!)
February 2015. Boracay, The Philippines
If paradise was easily accessible, everyone would go.
Boracay and the Philippines in general had been on my wish list during our first posting in China but it never materialize (or it wasn’t on somebody’s else priority list 😉) but we finally made it…. after a commercial flight to Manila, Night in a hotel near the Manila airport (baggage screening and ray and body scanning before entering the hotel included), a step on the scale for the passengers because of weight restrictions on the propeller plane, followed by a ride in 2 TukTuk to the port, a Banca Boat ride and finally another ride in a (bigger) TukTuk…. But all 100% worth it.
Not included in the picture: the blue sea, blue sky and blue sails on the boats; but you can find some of the pictures on Instagram… well tomorrow since I have a one day delay there 🤷‍♀️)
