I usually don’t post movie I go see… it’s got nothing to do with expat life but in this instance, apart from the fact that I went with a bunch of women from 4 different countries living in another country that none of them was from, it appears to me how differently I saw the movie compare to the other ladies.
I don’t think I’m an expert in everything Chinese but after living in Beijing 6 years there were parts of the movie where I could see myself nodding, totally understanding what they were doing in a scene. It became even more obvious when we discussed the movie over lunch. Most of the ladies were in Asia for a short while and/or only lived in Singapore so they were baffled with some of the concepts when I thought it was totally normal…ok not “my” normal but my “Chinese” normal 😉
Living abroad changes you, opens your eyes to new normal.
The Farewell (based on What You Don’t Know by Luke Wang).
Nikki’s family returns to China under the guise of a fake wedding to stealthily say goodbye to their beloved matriarch – the only person that doesn’t know she only has a few weeks to live.
