The Merlion, symbol of Singapore

The Merlion is a mythical creature with a lion’s head and the body of a fish that is widely used as a mascot and national personification of Singapore.

There are actually 7 Merlion Statues around Singapore.  The most famous one is at the Merlion park located near One Fullerton and the esplanade. It measures 8.6 meters tall and spouts water from its mouth (picture thousand of tourists having their picture taken with their mouth open trying to swallow the water!!) A Merlion cub is located near the original statue and measures just 2 meters tall.

There is also a giant one on the island of Sentosa.  The 37-meter-tall gigantic replica – with Mouth Gallery Viewing Deck on the ninth story, another viewing gallery on its head and Sentosa Merlion Shop, and capable of shining laser beams from its eyes.  I took this picture last week on my way to a meeting and just read afterward that it will close on 20 October 2019…what a good timing!
