And finally the now-famous robe worn by Rihanna, which took more than two years to complete.

The canary yellow silk cape, inspired by Chinese and French royalty, is hand-embroidered with metallic flowers and trimmed with thick, ochre-hued fur. Guo explains that the singer saw a picture of the dress online and contacted her to ask if she could borrow it for the gala. “I didn’t know much about Rihanna beforehand,” she admits. “When I saw what she looked like, I was worried whether she could wear the cape, because it’s so heavy.” But Rihanna’s presumed instinct–that any discomfort caused by wearing the 25-kilogram robe would be well worth its eye-catching drama–proved spot on. The dress was a showstopper. Its expansive round train was so eye-catching that social media lit up with Photoshopped memes refashioning the dress as a pizza or a jianbing , an egg-crepe snack common in China. The following day it made headlines everywhere.

A few more from Guo Pei: Chinese Art and Couture exhibition.

The 29 gowns on display were mind blowing work of art.

This is another one of my favorite from Guo Pei Exhibition.

青花瓷 “Blue and White Porcelain”-

Just like porcelain this was hand draw and hand painted then embroidered and 10,780 Swarovski crystals were added as embellishments. It features the classic Chinese patterns of flowers, crests, and clouds seen on blue-and-white porcelain and is applied with the same brush painting method and blue pigment.

I couldn’t just share one picture from Guo Pei exhibition so here’re few more.

This one is called “Snow Queen” and it’s part of Guo Pei’s 1002 Night collection from 2010

It weights 50 kg, took 25 month to complete the embroidery and was worn by the gorgeous 78 years old model Carmen Dell’Orefice on the runway. (Google it!!)

We went to the Asian Civilization Museum to see Guo Pei exhibition before its closure next week.

While Guo Pei got recognized Internationally from Rihanna’s trailing yellow gown at the 2015 Met Gala, in the early 2000s Guo Pei’s reputation began to grow, she received commissions to create styles for the 2008 Summer Olympics as well as the annual Spring Festival Galas put on by China Central Television (CCTV). She is responsible for Song Zuying’s dress that she wore during her performance with Plácido Domingo at the 2008 Summer Olympics closing ceremony.

This particular silk couture evening gown embroidered with gold (大金 – Magnificent Gold) was on display at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of my favorite. It is made with elaborate embroideries, similar to those used to produce thangkas (paintings or embroideries on scrolls) that often showcase Buddhist deities and scenes.
