Sur le Pont d’Avignon

{On the bridge of Avignon}

On y danse, On y danse

{We all dance there, we all dance there}

Sur le Pont d’Avignon

{On the bridge of Avignon}

On y danse tous en rond

{We all dance there in a ring}.

The bridge, over the Rhône river, is called Pont Saint Bénézet and only four arches (out of the initial 22) now remain. Built between 1171 and 1185, with a length of some 900 m (2950 ft) it was destroyed during the siege of Avignon by Louis VIII of France in 1226.
